With our call for papers now open, we are pleased to introduce Communications Earth and Environment, an editorially selective open access journal from Nature Research. Our scope encompasses the Earth, environmental and planetary sciences, including sustainability and environmental social science.  Communications Earth and Environment will complement the existing titles in the series, Communications Biology, Communications Chemistry, Communications Physics and Communications Materials, in providing a high-visibility platform for thorough, compelling and important work across a broad field of science.

As professional journal editors we will be working together with our academic Editorial Board to ensure that Communications Earth and Environment meets the needs of our community of readers: we aim for topicality, quality and consistency. We will endeavour to

  • Build communities around key open questions, beyond disciplinary boundaries. Progress in understanding the Earth and our environment often relies on more than one traditional discipline. We offer a forum for research and discussion around key themes – from the origins of life to plastics pollution; from climate change to metal and mineral resources; from the signature of plate tectonics to natural hazards – drawing on the full range of expertise in the Earth, planetary and environmental sciences.
  • Encourage diversity. We call on people from all backgrounds, affiliations, geographical locations and career stages to contribute to Communications Earth and Environment, and we pursue gender balance in reviewers and commissioned authors. We hope to engage scientists with a multitude of individual perspectives to help build a journal that is a valuable forum for everyone, authors, reviewers, editorial board members and readers. We are particularly committed to providing early career researchers from around the world with a platform where their voices are heard, so that they can become the next generation of ambassadors for science in society.
  • Champion progress towards reproducibility and Open Science. We endorse the principles of the Enabling FAIR data project; we strongly encourage code sharing where possible; we will publish peer review reports (unless the authors of a manuscript opt out); we welcome submission of independent confirmations of the most influential research; and we publish fully open access.

At Communications Earth and Environment, we are very excited about the journey that lies ahead of us. We whole-heartedly invite you to join us.
