About Joe Michalski
My research is focused on planetary geology, geochemistry and mineralogy, especially clay mineralogy. At the University of Hong Kong, I operate the Planetary Spectroscopy and Mineralogy Laboratory. My team and I are focused on research questions related to climate evolution and geologic processes on Mars, early life on the Earth and the possibility of life on Mars, deep biosphere and subsurface processes. We are also interested in natural resources in space. At HKU, I teach a course about future human civilization off planet (Leaving Earth) and a course in Remote Sensing. Before joining HKU in 2016, I was a Research Leader at the Natural History Museum in London, UK and a Senior Scientist at the Planetary Science Institute. I also worked for the Institute d'Astrophysique Spatiale in Paris, France and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, in Pasadena, USA.
